The performance of thermally treated pine

A soft wood with a strong character: The honey hue and characteristic knots of Nordic pine give it a warm and classic look — an authentic aesthetic that fully embraces the identity of softwood.
Enhanced dimensional stability: Thermal treatment lowers the wood's moisture content to 4-5%, giving it significantly superior dimensional stability compared to natural pine — shrinkage and swelling are greatly reduced, even in variable climates.

Wood from PEFC certified forests: The Scots pine used comes from sustainably managed forests, treated in kilns using a highly ecological process — no chemicals, no hazardous waste at end of life.

Wood aging

Upon installation, Thermopine displays a warm and deep golden hue, which thermal treatment intensifies by bringing out the natural character of pine and its typical resinous grain. Under the action of UV rays and climatic cycles, the board gradually evolves towards a soft and homogeneous silver-grey. This natural aging occurs uniformly over 12 to 18 months depending on exposure — without necessary intervention, and without impact on the material’s performance.

Maintain the initial color

The annual application of a suitable saturator helps maintain the warmth of the original honey hue. The deck thus retains its original golden-brown appearance when surface-maintained.

Routine maintenance

A semi-annual cleaning with soapy water and a scrub brush, or with a wood brightener, is sufficient to maintain the surface appearance. No periodic preservation treatment is required — the wood performs and ages naturally.

Allow to age naturally

If a grey patina is desired, no treatment is necessary. The evolution remains homogeneous and controlled, for a noble and natural-looking result.

Treatment process

Thermal wood treatment is a 100% natural process that profoundly transforms the physical and chemical properties of wood without resorting to any chemical products. Developed on an industrial scale in cooperation with VTT, the Technical Research Centre of Finland, the process consists of modifying wood at high temperatures in the presence of steam, under atmospheric pressure.

The cycle unfolds in three phases: a slow temperature increase in a steam atmosphere to prevent cracking and combustion of the wood, a stagnation at approximately 212 °C which is the origin of the wood’s structural modification, followed by a gradual cooling accompanied by slight humidification to prevent splitting. At the end of the treatment, the wood’s moisture content drops to approximately 4 to 6% and its hygrometric balance is permanently reduced, which gives it remarkable dimensional stability and much better resistance to climatic variations compared to untreated wood. The result is a naturally durable, rot-proof, and stabilized material, usable both indoors and outdoors in all climatic conditions, without requiring additional chemical treatment.
