Rail in linear metre (Decking)

Challenge
For the outdoor spaces, architect Nadine Stevens wanted a wood cladding with a contemporary look that met high standards for durability and ease of installation. The search for a “modified” wood with proven performance led her to select thermally modified ash combined with the patented invisible Grad® fastening system.
Solution provided by Grad®
In partnership with local construction company Waresa and carpentry firm Kratzing, Grad® offered a complete solution for thermally modified ash terraces installed on its rail system equipped with pre-assembled clips.
- Product performance: slightly crowned boards (Comfort profile) for better water drainage, breathability, and long-lasting stability, grooved on the back for quick and precise invisible fastening with the Grad® clip.
- Ease of installation: the 530 m² of terraces were divided into 24 zones, modeled using Grad 3D software, facilitating precise planning.
- Time saving: the precise cutting lists generated by Grad® enabled efficient assembly. Each board could be installed without complex adjustments.
Methodology
An accurate survey was carried out directly on site by the Grad® Germany teams. The data was then integrated into Grad 3D, the 3D planning and visualization software. This software enabled:
– the automatic generation of detailed installation plans,
– the division of surfaces into clearly identified zones,
– the creation of custom cutting lists for the entire structure and decking.
Results
Thanks to this industrial and optimized approach, all the terraces were installed in less than a month. Master carpenter Kratzing confirmed that a 21 m² balcony could be installed in a single day by one person, under optimal conditions.
“Are you still screwing or already clipping?” he humorously summarizes after discovering the advantages of the Grad® system.
Conclusion
The Feuerland project illustrates Grad®’s ability to meet the most demanding architectural expectations while simplifying on-site work. The Grad® system, combined with rigorous planning and high-performance digital tools, enabled a smooth, fast, and perfectly executed construction site.
